A sobering report on options for Skegness as sea levels rise and storms become more violent

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2p0epyll2o

Migrating people from Skegness and other seaside towns is among the options being looked at to protect Lincolnshire's coastal communities from flooding. More than 60,000 people are at risk of becoming flood victims unless Lincolnshire coastal defences are improved or other action is taken, a council boss has warned. Chris Miller, Lincolnshire County Council's head of environment, said 85% of defences would be unreliable after 2040.

I'm not sure that Skegnessians would appreciate the humour here, a parody of an old tourist poster that proclaimed "Skegness is SO bracing!"

Personally I think that we should also introduce the concept of restitution whereby the perpetrators have to put in positive community work, whether that's part of any earnings going to rape charities or to the victims, or being taken to give talks to offender groups or schools.

No. Let's not take rapists round schools to talk to children.

People want to be outraged, to have something/someone to blame. From iNews.

Sky News did a piece on this which builds a lot of context. It covered the huge increase in UK residents who were born abroad.
The rate of increase has plummeted but it's still another 170,000 people onto the population.
Rate of immigration may be falling but...
2004, fewer that 6m were born overseas. It is now about 13 million with 1.5 million having arrived since 2022, more than the population of Birmingham.

Only going to get worse as sea levels rise.
Thames Barrier was only designed to be functional until 2030. But they think they can keep it going until 2050.

Anyway. Viz had the right idea about Skegness 😁

Absolutley. Throw them into the chokey for 5 years so that when they come out they are violent drug addicts, much stronger and able to go on and rape more women.

Much better than rehabilitating them, teaching them the error of their ways and trying to get them back on the straight and narrow given that they were aged 13 and 14 at the time of the offence.

Who says they have to "come out"?

Rehabilitation could include training for gainful employment in a suitable occupation, say taxi-driver for example.

It's going to get very ugly when 'what are we going to do about all these brown people?' gets mainstreamed

FWIW, I'd venture to suggest that *every single one* of the people who cared for me so brilliantly in the Royal Brompton was an immigrant, from the Columbian nurse to the Italian anaesthetist and the Indian surgeon. Dozens of fantastic people giving new life back to UK citizens. And I felt like saying "Sorry" to each one of them for how inhospitable the UK is rapidly becoming. We really don't deserve them.

It is already mainstreamed.

When Simon Heffer was trying to rehabilitate Enoch Powell recently, several people pointed out that at least Powell was almost universally condemned at the time, and lost his job and was ejected from the Tory Party. He'd be feeling politically most at home now, were he still alive.

I know some African care workers. They all have stories of being racially abused by some of the people they care for.

I kind of wanted to ask them why they were here/there despite the hostility, and how on earth they stayed so darned upbeat (it wasn't just an act). Obviously (I guess) the benefits (no doubt including the opportunity to work at a leading hospital) outweighed the negatives, but if some of them were now going to have to wait 10-20 years to know if they'll be allowed to remain, it would be absolutely scandalous, not least from the practical point that we need them to keep us alive.
