Maybe I don't appreciate the practicalities but does Italy have land border posts checking people walking across. Border posts with Spain?

All my trips to EU cycling I've bounced across borders loads of times, no fences, no immigration officials checking anything, never showing my passport to anybody.

So how is Italy going to implement this?

Tha's for them to decide. It may get discussed at the EU emergency meeting on Tuesday. Also looks like France are taking a similar line.

Sort of. There was a Spanish Supreme Court decision that if asylum seekers do not arrive via a land border, their claims have to be processed. Hence, lots of people swam from Morocco to Ceuta (57 didn't make it).

Separately, Spain recently announced the amnesty for undocumented migrants already in Spain. This would not apply to new migrants, but good old social media conflated the two and created this mania.

I'm aware of those things but nontheless, do you not think that there is a problem here?

She isn't a million miles away from being right. NATO countries have help Ukraine defend itself plus Ukraine talking about joining NATO really did annoy Putin.

NATO on a land border must be pretty low on the Russian wish list.

She is the complete opposite of right. Putin sees Ukraine as part of Russia and his policy has been to take it, from ca. 2012. He found the EU and NATO leanings of Ukraine inflammatory because it would have made invading a sovereign nation harder.

Abbot's pigmy brained reasoning is like blaming the police for recording more crimes.

Ceuta is a territory of Spain. Morocco refers to it as occupied territory. Whenever diplomatic relations sour between Morocco and Spain, there tends to be a mass invasion of Moroccan's claiming asylum.

It is not representative migration, and the Moroccans always return back to Morocco.

Seems like the Spanish authorities just told them that they'd been duped, opened the gates, and said to go home, which they did. Pretty impressive. The European far right was so desperate for a crisis.

Yep - they are just disposable in the minds of the people trying to destabilise the EU and sow division and discontent.

I guess that Ceuta is to Spain what Gibraltar is to the UK, but at least in the case of the latter they seem to have come to a sensible compromise. Both are anachronisms in 2026.
