And when you have 60,000 people trying to swim across in limited space with open entry and restricted exit I guess it get dangerous. No idea about the causes of the tragic deaths but than many people swimming in limited space must be a high risk.

Spain have always opposed Morocco's occupation of Western Sahara. Morocco is courting US support for the anexation by for instance naming a road being built there after Trump. US, Russia and possibly Israel all benefit from annoying Spain and causing strife within the EU.

The swimming was due to a recent court case that meant asylum seekers that arrive by sea could not be deported as easily.

Entering Spain irregularly through Ceuta or Melilla does not grant the right to remain in the country, to travel to mainland Spain, or to move freely within Europe. It also poses a grave risk to life. No court ruling has changed this.

The recent Supreme Court ruling clarifies which procedure applies to those arriving by sea. Nothing more. It does not amend the Immigration Act. It does not declare refusal of entry at the border unlawful. It does not open any route of entry. It does not prevent returns.

The border has also been reinforced with a 500-metre maritime containment barrier at the Tarajal breakwater, compatible with the ruling and with returns. Nearly all of those who crossed on 30 July have already been returned to Morocco.

Ceuta and Melilla have a border control regime unique in Europe: a double filter. One control at the border with Morocco and a second, Schengen control on departure for mainland Spain, by sea and by air. No one boards without identifying themselves to the National Police.

The extraordinary regularisation process bears no relation to these events: it applies only to those already living in Spain before 1 January 2026. Anyone who crossed on 30 July is excluded. The only route is the legal one.

I think the following is correct which doesn't contradict your carefully worded quote:
- Arrive by land -> Sent back without any legal process
- Arrive by sea -> Sent back with a legal process albeit Spain is looking for ways to circumvent this and the legal process may only take a few days in any case.

When someone instructs Carter-Fuck to take on a newspaper reporter, it suggests that the jig's up. A pity, as by all accounts he is extremely intelligent and a visible example of what can be achieved from a very humble background, but dishonesty isn't a useful qualification in such a role.

I wonder if this is less about regugees and more about the Morocan Government pressuring Spain. It seems far too much of a coincidence that this massive and sudden numbers happened within days of Spain improving relations with Algeria which reflects on the ongoing issue of Western Sahara. Numbers like were seen in Ceuta don't happen spontaneously. To get 60,000 migrants together takes a lot of logistics (May 25 to May 26 UK got 36,000 crossing in small boats).

There are definitely games being played by the Moroccan government, but as mentioned above this highlights how Spain is a soft touch on immigration which has previously legalised all illegal immigrants and this is only going to encourage more 'triers'.
