I went on a rafting trip down the Grand Canyon 25 years ago and we could leave nothing behind, literally having to take our own crap out of there.

That's still the case. It isn't a festival being held on private land.

I imagine that for festivals it started with Glastonbury. You only need a bad weather Glastonbury to have massive problems with mud and therefore you end up with broken and unpackable tents. The festivals have to clear up. In the meantime tents have become cheaper and cheaper. They only need to last a couple of nights, and for less than £20, many people will just decide it's a no brainer to get a tent and then dispose of it. It's not like you are going to go properly camping in it.

The point is, which you are missing, is they are not disposing of anything. They are just leaving their shoot all over the place.
It really wouldn't be difficult to take their cans and bottles to an appropriate skip, their food waste to another, and their tents etc to another one.
They can't be bothered to do it, and the same attitude probably applies in other aspects of their lives.

The point is, which you are missing, is that whilst that is true, the fact is that not every attendee does that, and the organisers factor this into the ticket costs. They encourage people to clean up and pack up, but a lot of their target audience can't be arsed.

They did say that they had seen a meaningful improvement this year on packing up tents.
