He was still writing and was signing books for fans at a public event on Sunday apparently. Without being morbid, that's a nice way to go, healthy and active to the end, no illness, at home with family.

And quite tidily, a finished book to be published next month. He was jailed for perjury, but I can't remember him being an arse like too many of today's crop.

I suspect that they didn't need a second reading to get to grips with the intellectual depth. There was obviously a good market for them as readable yarns though, and he knew how to write for that market.
