I actually unsure how much the US is in reality slowing down. Trümp makes lots of noise about discarding regulations, etc. but eg car designers need fewer designs covering wider markets so a design for those few US states without pollution laws (ie following Trümp) just isn't economically viable. Similarly a lot of investment in hydrocarbon infrastructure is long term and investors need long term confidence and they'll recognise Trǔmp has a limited term (in the scale of their investments) and that Climate Change will be addressed so they will not be so ready to invest. undoubtedly Trũmp is making things worse but I suspect not as bad as the noise from Truth Social might suggest.

And other major carbon emitters are making good progress (at least some).
The US car market is pretty big, and there are enough lhd counties that will want ICE cars for the foreseeable.

Federal funding for green projects has dried up significantly. States have more autonomy but less money. I have a client that has talks stalled in Washington State now, despite the Democrat leaning politics there, so they are pushing ahead hard in Canada instead.

This and drilling licenses are creating somewhat of a reversal I would say. Even if they get a more far signed president next time, those project will still proceed.

I suspect Rosebank IS going to be refused, precisely because its a solution in a decade to a problem happening now. It also itsn really a solution at all.

Jackdaw is more immediate and at least provides some security of a potentialially scarce supply. Whereas there's no scarcity of oil, its just expensive.

At least, that's my understanding of the current arguments.

I suspect you're correct but Charlie seemed to be unable to comprehend that just because they both involve drilling in UK waters they have very different cases as you mention so a decision on one doesn't really apply to the other.

And Gov. is already spouting rubbish about it. All oil from Rosebank would not come to the UK (as we don't have refineries for it) but go directly to the Netherlands for refining.

Owners of Rosebank are expecting to make £1.5 bn profit yet it's UK Government (our money) that would be paying 80% of the development costs (through tax subsidies)

The Minister on the BBC this morning was making exactly that point (as mentioned above).

Well one is gas and the other is oil...

I don't think Stayt has much between his ears. Private school, then Birmingham Polytechnic. Nothing against polytechnics other than good old snobbery, but if you have all of the advantages of private schooling and are trying to get into a course as highly competitive as journalism isn't, this is quite the achievement.

Munchetty has much more about her, but her interview style is far too combative. She goes straight for the jugular aboht half way though the first utterance the interviewee makes, and tends to pretty much end any sensible discussion before it starts. She's better on the radio where there is more time available.

Maybe Stayt is there to make Not Very Clever People feel included.

It's in the BBC charter I think.

One of my favourite anecdotes in a book about the history of Radio 3 is about its early days when it was deliberately elitist, with a lots of Oxford & Cambridge academics (pfft, imagine!) involved in producing programmes. (They didn't actually have to be commissioned: departments could simply produce a programme and then ask for it to be broadcast.)

Anyway, a group of dons decided that they should broadcast a play in Ancient Greek. Which they did. Its official audience count, using the BBC's own counting system, was... zero.

Supposedly a court artist's sketch of Yaxley-Lennon on trial... anyway, even if it's fake, it amused me.

Oh no, sorry, that's France, 10 year gilts. Good news for French politicians who claim there's an easy fix, if only you'll elect them.

Really, you know that Jason Cofnas is a jerk, by the fact he ponces about with "whom", but follows that with the preposition at the end of the sentence.

Anyway, he still seems to have an audience in Oxford, thanks to 'Oxford Reform UK'
