Green PArty does put forward paper candidates eg South Norfolk Our Guide to being a Paper Candidate Why be a green party ‘paper candidate’ at a local election? The problem is that they never actually expected to win.
So suddenly things like jobs and poor health get in the way.
Or nationally (Green Party) https://greenparty.org.uk/get-involved/becoming-a-green-candidate/
And given only Green Party "campaigning" I got these elections for the local Councillor was one sheet of A4 in my letterbox, difference between a paper candidate and a regular candidate is not always massive. So put forward enough paper candidates, none of whom expect to be elected and then have to actually do the job, some will get elected almost by mistake.Being a non-target candidate is both one of the easiest and important things that you could do for the Green Party. There are local elections every single year somewhere in the country, and every single year we look for people who are willing to put themselves on the ballot paper. But why is it so important?
What do I need to do?
- In a democracy people should be able to vote for the party they truly want to, everyone should have a chance to vote Green
- The votes we get in local elections add up, and show that we have support everywhere not just in the areas where we campaign
- The media regulator looks at the percentage of seats we stand in and gives us proportional media coverage in the run up to the election (the short campaign)
- In the 2025 local elections Reform stood more candidates than ANY OTHER PARTY. We need to stand everywhere too to demonstrate that we are the opposition.
- We have clear evidence from the 2025 local elections, that wherever we stood the Reform vote was reduced, depriving them of victory in several places.
For now, all we need you to do is fill out a form and we will send it to your local parties. Note that not everywhere has local elections every year. A representative from your local party will be in touch with you.
And people may put themselves forward as paper candidates not because they have any intent to actually have to attend a Council meeting or have public contact them about local issues but "for the good of the party" to help increase media coverage, to help block Reford (see above Green Party justifications). Then those elected need to find some half reasonable excuse and "I didn't intend to actually win" would sound really bad.
