As to keeping the strait (insofar as the US currently 'owns' it), I'm reminded of a moment of epiphany quoted in a programme I've been following about the yanks kicking us out back in 1776:

"And Washington suddenly has this insight: he doesn't have to win. The British have to win. He doesn't. He only has to not lose."

I wish I'd recorded the quote, but it was a Ukrainian officer saying something along the lines of, the Russians could always rely on crushing opposition with overwhelming armour, 'but if they sent 1,000 tanks tomorrow we would destroy them all with drones. Every last one'.
