Because it's complicated. Brexit makes it more complicated.

The soft land border between the NI and SI is an EU border. The R of I is an EU member state with a tariff imposition of 20%, while Northern Ireland is part of the UK with a tariff imposition of 10%. The result is the inevitable increase in smuggling of goods for export to the US across the border from south to north. This will lead to demands for security on the border, which is a breach of international agreements. Politically, for the UK, it's a nightmare situation.

The only solution is to harmonise the rates between the EU and the UK. Therefore, politically Starmer will need to make a 20% tariff imposition on the US in order to force Trump to increase the tariff on the UK to 20%, making the UK position economically worse.

Bloody Leavers. Oops, sorry, I forgot that they knew what they were doing.

Why do we need to stop smuggling South to North?, can’t we make money from it, and, create a few jobs?

So far, the emphasis appears to be on the financials. There is (IMHO) another aspect to protectionism, ie, lack of innovation. When consumers buy American (substitute country of your choice) based on nationalism, rather than best product (for the price), manufacturers become complacent, and, innovation falters.

There were many more MPs doing the same in 2020

It's called politics. Trump referred to himself as an idiot a couple of weeks ago, because only an idiot would have signed the existing NAFTA deal.

Who to say they are following the exact strategy. Trump is trying to bring manufacturing back to the USA, stimulating growth.

It goes without saying, times are different, but using parts of history to achieve modern day results
Time will tell. Best case would result in diminishing the RoW's reliance on US trade. The result of that will not just be economic, but geopolitical.

Even if the policies are successful in repatriating manufacturing, this will be at US labour costs, so for most Americans it will be a zero sum gain. Or worse, the house will win.

All of this rape and pillage rhetoric is ignoring that the US (and others) have been taking the right royal p1ss out of labour forces in other countries for generations.

I am struggling to see an upside.

Not concerned about European countries - globalist puppet

Ursula von der Leyen has said. “The global economy will massively suffer, uncertainty will spiral and trigger the rise of further protectionism,” she said

The chicken tax is why America has had such a lot of really average pick up trucks isn't it?

Worth bearing in mind that unless it causes prices to go up, no American worker benefits from this.

That presupposes that the US can be entirely self contained. Possibly it could, but I remain to be convinced that middle America understands the economic pain to themselves of getting to that point. Nor is it clear if you'd end up better off, or just more patriotic.
