Anyway, back to Trump. Something weird happened to Stephen Miller in an interview when he cited 'plenary authority' and then appeared to realise he'd not meant to reveal the term. That term has previously been used by luminaries such as Hitler, Mussolini & Stalin.

The USAnians don't realise they already have a dictator. This is the combined effect of exercising that power followed by the forest of lawsuits and appeals that defer any reversal of those powers, (equivalent of denial of service attacks in the courts), a corrupt supreme court and the utter incontinence of congress.

To my mind, the mid terms are pretty much the last chance for the US to enter a protracted period of no democracy, only the appearance of it. Such is the extent of gerrymandering, pretty much anything after that will be rigged.

Amazingly, the GOP is ahead of the democrats on all major issues, so it is looking very bad.

It's undoubtedly a strategy to see if they can actually deploy federal troops against the wishes of a state (Democratic, obvs) and get away with it. Just a few hundred at first, but sometime before the midterms, if they've not been physically stopped from (in effect) invading states against their will, they'll take military control of those states. Pritzker and Newsom can see it for what it is, while Schumer will be writing very serious letters.

One way or another, if Miller and Trump continue the invasions (for that's what they are), it's going to get ugly.

My semi-ignorant take on what's happening is that since the Civil War there's been a vaguely legislated truce-equilibirium between the independence of the states and the power of the federal government, with various competences being allotted at state or federal level, sometimes adjudicated by the Supreme Court (e.g. Roe v Wade). I've no real idea how much of the individual states' competences are prescribed in the Constitution.

In the case of Roe v. Wade, the SC muscled in on what was settled law and gave power back to the states to decide on abortion issues, but at the same time Trump/Miller/Project 2025 have identified areas where that might have only been settled by convention or never before tested at all (e.g. National Guard from one state 'invading' another state without its express permission) where the state can override the autonomy of individual states.

tl;dr - the USA is looking less and less like a 'country' by the day. Putin's dream of breaking up the USA might yet become reality. Wild times.

tl;dr - The United States of America is nothing more than some states that are/were united, not a country.
