It could well end in the dismantling of NATO and the formation of a new European/Canadian alliance.
Not sure how this would improve the stated aim of improved US security…

Indeed.
If things go t1ts up in Venezuela, Trump will look like a failure and so far, there's no indication US oil companies are willing to commit. The puppet president is entertaining Russia, China and Iran and is simply a mini Maduro.
Thiel and Musk want Greenland. They are the drivers but an unsuccessful campaign to 'run' Venezuela doesn't bode well for these ambitions.
Imperialistic resource colony ambitions in a modern world is far more complex than Trump and the cohort of incompetents could possibly imagine.
More competent administrations failed in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Vietnam, Nicaragua...

I am getting the feeling that all this stuff is going to Trump's addled head, and he's getting bolder and bolder at trampling on any sense of 'world order'. The only calculation now seems to be "Who's going to stop us?" And we seem to have an answer, which the US imperialists are taking full advantage of. There's not even a token nod to a single 'norm' or international body. It is extraordinary in both speed and extent.

Come on, it's ill thought out. It's bollox. It has so little long term efficacy.

Not only that, they don't have the backing of the MAGA base who were promised 'America first' and no more foreign wars to which Trump repeated ad nauseum during his campaign.

Yes they do.

CNN survey has 85% approval rating as of January 2026 for Trump actions. The Hispanic vote has also jumped massively after capturing Maduro

There is no need to wonder. Donnie has already stated that he wants to control the entire hemisphere.
That goes from Alaska to Chile, Hawaii to Greenland. That includes Canada and The Falklands. Madness or not he has to be taken seriously.

You're talking out of your arse

Currently Venezuela produces around 1 million barrels a day of crude oil

Finally, something we can agree on. Trump is talking out of his arse, since those are his numbers.
Glad you have finally come around to reality.

I'm intrigued what taking Greenland by force looks like. Does it involve sending more soldiers to their existing bases and claiming the whole country? Or are they going to have soldiers patrolling the 50k population? And then what?

He will ask for the Greenland administration to bow down at his feet, and expect Denmark to say "Okay".
If not he will use the troops there to remove the administration. Not enough troops? Send in more.

Trump was being quoted on R5 news this morning.

US President Donald Trump has said Venezuela "will be turning over" up to 50 million barrels of oil - worth about $2.8bn (£2.1bn) - to the US, after a military operation to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.
The oil will be sold at its market price, Trump posted on social media, adding he would control the money raised and use it to benefit the people of Venezuela and the US.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday: "I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil, to the United States of America.
"This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!"

"Trust me."

Trump is worried about the threat from Russia so he needs Greenland yet Putin is Trump's new best friend and when it comes to Ukraine Russia is (according to Trump) totally trustworthy.

So where is the Russian threat requiring Trump control Greenland?
