Re: EU Steel Tariffs
EU representative on radio was explaining how, when Trump introduced his tariffs EU tried to get "like minded" countries to work together to counter. But UK broke away and went out on its own for its own benefit ie not wanting to work with others. So why would UK now expect special treatment from EU.

There is over-production of steel in the world and excessive subsidies in some countries further skewing the market. So without countries working together I can see why EU is acting to protect it' own industry.

When Trump introduced knee-jerk steel tariffs, it was considered an outrage by many. The act of an orange buffoon.

When the EU follows...

The UK may have a case taking this to arbitration, but I assume Starmer will try to negotiate higher quotas.

Note the tariff only applies to steel in excess of the quota.

Yes, but the point being made is that as we are outside of the EU we are now vulnerable to tariffs from even more major economic blocs.

It’s the Telegraph moaning about it. And they promoted it.
So it’s a total shambles, self made by the dicks who voted for it.

I opined over on Cake Stop that the moaning from Brexiters (inc, the Telegraph) wouldn't stop once we'd left the EU, because the EU is still there doing EU-ey things just 34km away, and as much as they would like to pretend it isn't a major market on our doorstep or that Brexit isn't a total shambles of their own making, they just can't help themselves in their fixation. It's both sad and comical. It's why they desperately wanted and still want it to fail.

Still, at least Badenoch has given it a ringing endorsement this morning.

Seems the EU is going a bit Trump on steel. But I expect they will get a free pass for being the EU.
The challenge it faces is that after Trump's steel tariffs other countries will need to find somewhere to sell their steel into ie dumping (given worldwide overproduction) and with big state subsidies in some countries eg China they need to safeguard their own manufacturing capacity, just like the UK has done by eg taking over steel works.

All they are doing is responding to the market disruption Trump has created.

The Polish workers have a great work ethic, wonder why they all disappeared 🤔

The main advantage of working with Polish tradies is not having to be sympathetic because their gran/mum/dog is sick or their car broke down, and that's why they've not turned up for a month.

Culturally, there seems to be far more stoicism and pragmatism. (And this is not just from meeting the odd plumber from eastern Europe).
