These Social Media and similar companies seem to be above normal laws to some extent
My way of thinking about it is this
I M&S or Next moved out of their Widnes store - i.e. left a shop empty with a large frontage with big windows
Then I could buy/rent it and fill the windows up with large screen TVs
Then create a web site where people could upload videos and images and pay to have them on the TVs
Now - I'm "just a bloke" and the website is automated - you pay the price for the screen - more at peak times - less at 2 in the morning etc etc
and it goes on the screen
But I am a responsible person and I have a complaints procedure and polices
so if anyone complains that screen 1 is showing port or racist slogans then as soon as I read the complaint I will check and remove it
but clearly I am entitled to some sleep time and a day off so it might take and hour or more to do it
I am doing all I can and removing anything that should not be there
and my polices are very clear and strictly enforced to stop that
Now - if something is on there shoing hard core porn at 3:30 on a school day
or seriously bad racist stuff is on there and it is noticed
Then I reckon the Cops would be knocking on the door to have a long and detailed word involving words I don;t want to hear
like fine and jail
but those excuses are exactly what companies like Facebook and YouTube use to excuse bad thing appearing on their platfor
they say "it is just too big to check everything"
and "as soon as we see anything against policy, we remove it"
but if I did that in my shop I would get done
but they don't - because "the company cannot be expected to control it"
which is rubbish - the laws should apply to all companies the same
