Free speech

But is it purely commercial?

FCC [Federal Communications Commision] chairman Brendan Carr has threatened to take action against ABC after Jimmy Kimmel said in a monologue that “the MAGA gang” was attempting to portray Charlie Kirk‘s assassin as “anything other than one of them.”

Appearing on Benny Johnson’s podcast on Wednesday, Carr suggested that the FCC has “remedies we can look at.”

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Yes. Nexstar, who show Kimmel's show across the US, are going for a $6billion merger with Tegnar. However, in the US, one media organisation cannot access more then 40% of local TV channels, this merger would allow Nexstar to access 80%. The FCC say that they will change the rules, on certain conditions being met. Kimmel's firing was one.

The Mango Mussolini is now after NBC with Seth Myers and Jimmy Fallon's shows now under threat.

So much for free speech and being against cancel culture.

Using 'free speech' to whip up hatred and violence against anyone you disagree with especially gay, trans, people of colour, other religions, people with disabilities and other political opinions (within reason for the last one).

You can criticise but whipping up hatred is where the line is drawn.
If only we could all agree on what constitutes whipping up hatred.

I'm not a free speech absolutist and I think the law as it stands in the UK is about right. There is a caveat to that however in that I don't think Lucy Connolly should have been jailed for her Tweets about migrant hotels.
I see she was released last month, and agree with this:

"Speaking after her release, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch compared Connolly's treatment to that of those who took part in riots following the Southport attack.

"Her punishment was harsher than the sentences handed down for bricks thrown at police or actual rioting," Badenoch said on X.

"Protecting people from words should not be given greater weight in law than public safety. If the law does this, then the law itself is broken and it's time Parliament looked again at the Public Order Act."

Similarly I don't think Jimmy Kimmel should've been sacked but that's between him and his employer who clearly care more about their bottom line than defending him (something that's been happening to plenty on the right for ages, welcome to our world Jimmy). It's also hard to feel too sorry for him when you see his unbridled glee when Tucker Carlson suffered the same fate (props to the poster who found that clip).
I found the clip. Or rather, found the person who found the clip. ©The internet is forever.

I don't know except to say that I wouldn't have sacked him.
I wouldn't either. Then again I wouldn't have hired him in the first place. Nothing to do with his politics, he just doesn't do it for me.

Also, free speech ≠ the right to a TV show. I'm sure he'll find lots more work with free speech martyr on his CV.

This fella is for free speech, if he knew what he was supporting

Me thinks not very well paid idiot.

"President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his claim that critical television coverage of him is “illegal” and pushed back on criticisms that his administration was taking actions that chill free speech.

“When 97 percent of the stories are bad about a person, it’s no longer free speech,” Trump told reporters."

Here we go. George Orwell, 1933 Germany, pick your comparison.

If 97 percent of stories about me were bad, I might want to reflect…..

You and I might reflect, but some personality types don't have that feature.

For the record, in case I change it later - "Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
