Just seen the video of the ship getting torpedoed. Total devastation.
Any Iranian ship not currently in port must now be considered a sitting target. And the US subs will be waiting for any ships to leave or return to port.

According to reports they have no more ships locally. Around 109 total number vessels. 25 of those submarines. I expect small type class. US subs and aerial sub searching planes will be hunting them down

A few random examples from the late 90s: Iran accommodated the most refugees in the world, Iran made 80% of the world's drug busts by volume, Iran opposed the Taliban, Kurds received better treatment in Iran than in Iraq or Turkey, Christians could drink alcohol, women were present in a lot of society, the hardline were under considerable pressure to reform.

As a country it is completely incomparable to its neighbours to the east (Pakistan and Afghanistan) or in the ME.

Why is Iran run by a regime, but, say, China is not? I get that it is not the Trump regime yet, because in theory there is still democracy, but I never hear of the Xi regime or Putin regime.

You do hear of the Putin regime now. But the distinction with the entirely legitimate and well behaved government in China can be explained by our need for cheap clothes.

Of course they did - because they are a vicious and abhorrent fundamentalist Islamic authoritarian state. They hang gay men and female rape victims for the same reason they oppose drugs. They (Shiite Iran) opposed the (Sunni) Taliban out of ideology and self serving interests, just like they now cooperate on some issues out of self serving interests.

Saudi are terrible. They are not in the same league as Iran. They didn't gas 700 schoolgirls, they don't routinely execute raped girls, they don't sanction marriage and sex with girls from age 9.

The gasing was, by all accounts, extreme elements at the time trying to quell the Zan, Zendegui, Azadi movement in 2022. If you go back and read the news you will see that parts of the state were actively investigating and trying to stop it.

Re the age 9 for marriage, in Saudi Arabia there was no minimum age for girls marriage until a couple of years ago.

The sad thing in all of this is that Iran is the middle eastern country with the most progressive social outlook, even more so than Turkyie. I've visited several times, and if the women didn't wear head cover, you could have thought that you were in Italy, Spain or France based on the social interactions.
