I think this is Trump starting to realise that actions have consequences that you can't control... you can smell the panic. I have a suspicion that he's bungling this one so bigly that his polling is going to plummet even more, and he's going to be left with a stark choice between taking the Republican Party down with him in the midterms, or he'll take them down by attempting to cancel them.

I gather that domestic support for the war is already lower than it was for the Vietnam War at the end of the war.

It looked for a moment that things might move in a de-scalation direction, and then Bush II came out with the Axis of evil shït and any progress was scuppered. The hardliners said what's the point making the effort if we can't trust the other side to keep its side of the bargain.

Then Rouhani manages the nuclear agreement with Obama and Trump fücks it up again. Rinse and repeat, and we are where we are.
