I genuinely think their belief was that world oil prices wouldn't impact the US because it is a net exporter.
I know in Venezuela they have very low prices set domestically, so I can understand his confusion that only parts of the United States does this.

Ex UK diplomat on the radio just said that the first thing anyone knows about Iran is that they will block the shipping lanes as soon as they are attacked.
