The US walking away is a necessary first step to the Strait re-opening.

I hardly think the Iranians will say "That was jolly, we'll open it up again first thing tomorrow".

I suspect that when it does reopen it will be with significant passage tolls (charged by Iran). Trùmp has made Iran very very aware of the importance & "value" of what they have and there is no going back. Trùmp cannot make Iran unsee what he has highlighted to them.

Thinking longer term, Iran charges for passage, making Iran less attractive for buyers/transporters. Since oil is sold as a commodity and by and large it's the same price wherever you source it from, won't market forces cause a change?

A bit late to grow a spine, but better than never, I suppose.

Perhaps they sense that he is weak (and floundering).

Maybe that's the power Iran now has in that their own oil/tankers pass free yet everybody else's get charged making their oil more competitive so they sell more, get more income whilst other gulf states lose out.

All the US has really managed to achieve (other than an imagined destruction of Iran’s military and nuclear manufacturing capabilities) is to show Iran has a really strong bargaining chip they had previously been to scared to use. They now know they can use it with impunity and come out of this stronger than at the start.

Great news overnight. It is nearly over, but it is being escalated.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

I don't know how much of that is Israel. Whilst Trump was talking about how the job was finished and how they did a regime change even though it wasn't his intention (and even though he didn't), Iran was being hit with some huge ordnance.
When you catch up with the media, last night's WH presser with him after the SCOTUS decision that went against him was something to behold (he arrived at the supreme court to boo's and two fingered salutes).
Including slating Republicans who went against him and the lie after lie regarding countless issues like how popular he was (recent poll - 31% approval) and how well the stock market was doing and that he didn't care about gas prices because he saved the world from an imminent nooklear attack.
Pure, unfiltered sundowning. Totally bonkers.

With some heavy irony, If he falls and some Epstein stuff stuck, the defence will cite unfit for trial. The fittest and most intelligent president ever who passed so many IQ tests that other presidents couldn't manage...
