The real problem is that Hamas  can be defeated militarily, but only by killing many times more innocent men, women and children to get at them. And even that will not stop another Hamas from starting up again, nor stop further alienating Israel from its neighbours and other countries other than its patron and military sponsor, the US.
The point that general was making and i think it makes a lot more sense then Nethanyahu does, is that destroying/eliminating the troops does not kill the ideology Hamas is not only the terrorist in Gaza or the puppetmasters in Qatar there is a whole political layer in between which stretches all over the world. Ranking from willing participants to useful idiots.
Hamas game to power as hero's trough their wolf in sheepskin chararable actions/organisations but as soon as they got the full power in Gaza they where no better then Isis and joining Hamas in Gaza is more off a means of survival then it is a real choice.
And i have said this before but i will say it again, Hamas does'nt need Isreal to kill innocents civilians, they can very well do that on their own, it's just that if isreal does it it lead to all kinds of people in the west that would be killed just for who there are if they ever entered Gaza chanting pro Hamas Slogans..

The problem with fighting something like Hamas is too the death toll with be high on all sides, Isreali Solders, civilians and Hamas terrorist.

(apologies for Tele' link!)

Bardem, who is married to Penelope Cruz, also called for a “commercial and diplomatic blockade” and sanctions targeting Israel.

When asked if he would work with a company that has business interests in Israel, the actor said he “cannot work with someone who justifies or supports the genocide”.

A number of stars also showed their support for Palestine at the Hollywood awards show on Sunday, including Aimee Lou Wood who, along with her White Lotus co-star Natasha Rothwell, wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin.

Article I found interesting. Looking like Netanyahu is starting to prepare Israelis for the impacts of world opinion on Israel's international standing and trade and the economic impacts
Netanyahu’s ‘super-Sparta’ vision braces Israel for isolated economic future
The future the prime minister laid out for Israel, of a more militarised society, a partial autarky – or economically self-sufficient country – with limited trade options and relying increasingly on homemade production, has stirred up a backlash among Israelis who are ever more uneasy at the prospect of following him down the path to a pariah state.

And people question how Israel are seen as the bad guys.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y59z6rznvo

“We paid a lot of money for this war," said Smotrich. "So we need to divide how we make a percentage on the land marketing later".

FWIW I think the below is an accurate statement on how things are. The headlines and politico are just distractions.

Israel's far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich has said the Gaza Strip could be a "real estate bonanza" and that he is in talks with the US about dividing up the territory after the war - an idea previously condemned internationally.
Speaking at an event in Tel Aviv, he said "a business plan is on President Trump's table".
"We've done the demolition phase... Now we need to build," he said.

It does feel like they're making the decisive push for Gaza City now. Ethnic cleansing and genocide on a national scale.
