He was merely expected to stand up for the fellow musician he'd hired.

Green Day found themselves in a sort of similar situation. When they were just breaking into the mainstream they risked being barred by venues by insisting on taking an openly gay band as their opening act. This was early 90s, and being openly gay wasn't a thing to be taken lightly.

They took a much bigger risk at the time than Sheeran would have taken standing by Macklemore.

Kyle Gass got sacked from Tenacious D for making a joke about Trump. It was a rubbish joke about the failed assassination.
The band is essentially a comedy band formed by 2 comedians, but Jack Black was happy to let Gass go to keep his image up.
Should he have stood by him?
These things are very tricky.

I thought they were back together?

Well done Green Day!

So, tell us what selfless act in your career was inspired by this.

Sheeran has been dragged into a debate on Israel / Palestine by someone else’s political views and comments. They are undoubtedly passionate and well-researched on the subject but Sheeran probably isn’t yet was being expected to make a definitive announcement on the subject.
Sherran dragged himself into the debate by failing to stand-up for his friend. He could have avoided the debate by standing up for his friend on a Freedom of Speech basis and his friend's right to express his personal views.

But next concert there is Sheeren up on stane saying "‘What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, children’s lives.". Does he think repeating the sentiment he failed to defend his friend over is avoiding "been dragged into a debate on Israel / Palestine by someone else’s political views and comments".

As it is I'm a lowly pawn in a not very big tech company. I have never been in such a position. I was offered a well paying job (without having applied for it) at a "defence" company when I finished my PhD, I declined, as I don't find the defence industry palatable. The job I went to paid less. Does that count?

bollox. His friend created this mess (with, to be clear, admirable motivations!). Sheeran was put in a crazy difficult poistion.

He's not Desmond Tutu, or a trained diplomat; I'm hardly surprised that he's failed to extricate himself from the mess cleanly.
Unlike the armchair activists on here, who no doubt would conduct a stadium-filling artist role as well as their exemplary Cycle-Chat careers ...

You're probably on a list somewhere.

At one point in my career I was sort of working of a civilian research project (for a UK Government scientific research QUANGO) and after a bit a couple of military people (obvious in their green fatigues) started turning up to project meetings, never introduced themselves, never said anything. I walked off the project quickly. Maybe not a massive sacrifice as I was also on a far more interesting project that was already taking 12 hrs a day.

I don't agree.
He was friends with Macklemore so would have been very aware of his views.

When you take on any job/role there are aspects to the job that you may not want but go with the job, no choice. Sometimes new aspects you don't want are added to a job over time. And it's guaranteed that situations will arrise that you really don't want to have arrisen but you have to deal with them - life. If you don't have the skills you get advisers who do.

And he didn't extricate himself but next concert leapt straight back in expressing same sentiment Macklemore had expressed.

I'll try this one more time:
Who cares? I mean, yes, genuinely well done Green Day. But do their actions obligate Sheeran to live to the same standard?
(ignoring the fact that gay rights and Palestine are massively different issues, and Ed DID give Macklemore a big break by getting him on the tour in the first place ...)

FAFO

Israel is facing water shortages because of their actions in Gaza. Israel destroyed the water infrastructure of the territory, so now all of Gaza's waste water is just dumped into the Mediterranean untreated. This has caused an algal bloom which in turn forced Israeli desalination plants to close.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...-treatment-plants-pollution-sanitation-crisis
Which raises the question as to why Israel with its highly accurate bombing has destroyed Gaza's waste water processing infrastructure (something totally civilian). To me the most obvious reason is to make Gaza uninhabitable for Palestinians so they'll all want to emigrate ... but my levels of cynicism maybe colour explanations that come to my mind?
