What fooled them is that Boris Johnson got away with blowing billions due to his bad decision making during early Covid.
Loading extra extra debt was just too unpalatable for the markets.

Seems the options are to freeze pensions, freeze benefits and probably increase the pension age further.

Is that your view or have you seen those things proposed?

I am not saying you are wrong.

1st two 'have not been ruled our', last is mine, assuming tax cuts hold.
To be honest, the fall in sterling also makes the price cap government bill look unsustainable too.

There they need lots of luck.

I've seen nothing about the pension age rising but any notion that pension and benefits rates will rise with inflation are said to be ''on the table.''

From the Joseph Rowntree Foundation:

It is shocking to hear the government suggesting that they may not do what Rishi Sunak promised and uprate benefits by inflation next April as usual. This will mean yet another devastating blow to the finances of people on the lowest incomes and will cause fear for millions who have spent the past months struggling to feed their families, cook hot food and heat their homes.
Many people across the UK will agree it is morally indefensible that the prime minister would choose to give tax cuts to the richest funded on the backs of the poorest in our society. Those who will lose out if the Government continues down this track include people with low earnings, families with children, carers and people who are sick or disabled. YouGov poll gives Labour 33% lead, which is clearly bonkers.
But if it transferred to votes it would leave the Tory party with less than 80 seats! And Labour with a majority of over 200 seats.

I am all for kicking the Tories out for a generation or more but that sort of majority is dangerous territory too. PR would be better.

This is how it would look under FPTP.

Edit to add… this map is from Twitter so comes with all the usual caveats.
