They should be supplied to the appropriate House committee who'll filter for relevance, national security and any interference with police investigation

Files in the 3rd category to be withheld until either made public in court or until the investigation finishes

And so it came to pass

Interesting even if you don't like the personalities (and I'm assuming neither Mogg and Starkey will get a lot of love here).

In next week's episode of Between Two Ferns, David Ike will be chatting with Liz Truss.

Yes very droll. I mean, apart from the fact that Rees Mogg studied history at Oxford, is a former Leader of the House of Commons, Lord President of the Council, and a former Secretary of State, he's exactly like the former sports presenter who went a bit mental, started wearing turquoise shell suits and writing books about the Royal Family being lizards, so feel free to glibly dismiss his opinion without having watched the discussion.

Fair. He has far more in common with Liz Truss.

What about David Starkey?

He was (so far as I can make out) a fairly well respected historian who fell out of favour after making some ill judged comments on race. it doesn't stop him being a good historian and authority on the constitution though.

Did he out-group lizards? I bet he did.

"In the Commons Darren Jones also said Mandelson initially requested "not just two or even three times, but more than six times the final amount”, and the documents suggest that Mandelson requested a severance payment of £547,201".

What is it with this guy and money? Between consulting, speaking engagements, and his EU pension, he can't be short of a few bob.

His legal fees will be getting expensive?

I'd forgotten about the misconduct charges, though maybe he hadn't been charged at the point he was asking for the £500k pay off. But yes, forward planning I guess and realising he might need quite a war chest of cash for any legal difficulties that might be on the horizon.

No, I think he's just a chancer. Or he needs to pay off a mortgage on his house in DC.

JRM makes an interesting opening in this commentary on the release of the Mandelson documents. There's absolutely no doubt in his mind that parliamentary privilege trumps any other law and no court can challenge what was said there. He also reasserts that rules on sub judice don't extend to reporting on parliamentary papers. So here we are, the first tranche of papers tell us what we already knew, that Starmer is absolutely terrible at politics and as a result of ignoring due diligence on Mandelson now finds himself in some very deep doo doo. Who knew?
