Cables seem to have come and gone. I think modern clutches with a heavier action are the issue, plus the drag on a lengthy cable.
When the clutch on my 2005 Berlingo went the recovery driver was sceptical when I said his suggestion of hydraulic failure was unlikely as the clutch was cable operated. He agreed with me after looking under the bonnet.
The more modern HDi engines apparently had hydraulic clutches - mine was a more primitive form of diesel...
