Met police’s facial recognition plans fall foul of European law, says watchdog
Scotland Yard’s plan to widen the use of live facial recognition technology is unlawful because it is incompatible with European laws, the equalities regulator has said.

As the UK’s biggest force prepares to use instant face-matching cameras at this weekend’s Notting Hill carnival, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said its use was intrusive and could have a “chilling effect” on individuals’ rights.

The Met’s policy on LFR technology was unlawful because it was incompatible with articles 8 (right to privacy), 10 (freedom of expression), and 11 (freedom of assembly and association) of the European convention on human rights, the watchdog said.

And as the EHRC are also involved in a Judicial Review in relation to Police use of LFR it will be interesting to see if the Met just ignore the regulator or pay any attention.

Personally I don't subscribe to the "If you've done nothing wrong you've nothing to fear" argument as history has taught us that this is not always the case.

Are you going?
I’ve only been twice (despite living a 20min tube ride away) once in the late 80s and again early 90s. It was fantastic then, but looks too crowded for a middle-aged fogey now. Even back then it took over half an hour to get from one end of Ladbroke Grove to the other. I saw Burning Spear, ears were ringing for days after - never heard bass like it. Bloody fantastic!

When any event has rapes, stabbings and murders, it's time to shut it down, whether it's a carnival or English cricket test match

There have been either four or five murders within the Carnival 'footprint' since 2000.

Obviously five too many but how do you stop a mass participation event that's run for many years?
