Thanks - I've always felt pretty welcome abroad :okay:

It's a bit awkward sometimes having to explain brexit - but they know we're not all into it ...
Well we went to Gran Canaria three weeks ago and you can see people's reaction to the Brits there has changed. It is embarrassing being English now. The hotel we routinely stay in - but hadn't for the two years we all lost to the virus - had changed quite a bit. It had gone from being Brit-friendly to being much more welcoming to our German cousins. We didn't get the usual cheery welcome from reception who greeted us with undisguised disdain. Only one TV channel in English (Sky news) for instance and all the signage in the hotel being in Spanish/German and some of the waiting staff struggled with English.

Well it was always a bit embarrassing being English abroad, especially if near a resort town hosting the all day breakfast munching lager swillers who, wouldn't make any effort with the language.

But elsewhere, even since brexit I've had nothing other than warmth, and even sympathy, as soon as it became apparent I'm not a brexiteer.

Tbh I think if you're an independent tourist off the beaten track a bit, they tend to automatically assume you're not 'one of them'.

And if you make some attempt with the language..However hopeless, that helps too.

My German farm help tells me that most of her fellow citizens regard brexit with a sort of nonplussed mystification..
But of course it's not of their day to day concern .

Plus having their own cohorts of anti EU and anti forriner sorts, and some difficult history themselves they also know how things can get out of hand / how people can be manipulated into believing untruths peddled about 'others'

Then I'd choose a more professionally run hotel.

Has anything happened in those two years that could possibly contribute to changed attitudes? I seem to remember we voted to leave the EU six years ago.

What are shopkeepers, bars, restaurants and people in the street doing to make you feel embarrassed?

Perhaps the local businesses are still upset by the way the travel restrictions hit them, or Germans continued to use the place more than Brits, and if so it is only to be expected a commercial organisation will adapt to its new customer base. Businesses are out to make money and do not deliberately antagonise potential customers,

Seek and ye will find.

Sorry, I didn't realise you'd know about all that, having been yourself.

The first sentence was just good advice, given that you say staff greeted you with undisguised disdain. I am sure there are other establishments that would welcome your business.

The rest was asking for clarification of how exactly you were made to feel embarrassed.

I have never been to Gran Canaria, but have holidayed in Europe a lot and have never felt that anyone was being awkward.

My sister goes there a lot and she is not the type to keep quiet or continue doing that if she felt anything was wrong with attitudes. She voted for Brexit and possibly does not go there looking for changed attitudes.

No, it was a veiled insult.
You are obviously free to take it that way if you wish, but you cannot deny that any hotel reception that greets its customers with "undisguised disdain" is not run professionally. I would have asked to speak to the manager, especially as it was a hotel you routinely stayed in so had given them a lot of business in the past.

I hope you get better service at the next hotel you book in Gran Canarias

As our beloved leader told us we took back control of our freedom just like Ukraine.

I'll bet Ukraine's exports have fallen recently but you don't see them whining about it. :okay:
to be accurate they are exporting quite a few anti-tank missiles to Russia
