Well we went to Gran Canaria three weeks ago and you can see people's reaction to the Brits there has changed. It is embarrassing being English now. The hotel we routinely stay in - but hadn't for the two years we all lost to the virus - had changed quite a bit. It had gone from being Brit-friendly to being much more welcoming to our German cousins. We didn't get the usual cheery welcome from reception who greeted us with undisguised disdain. Only one TV channel in English (Sky news) for instance and all the signage in the hotel being in Spanish/German and some of the waiting staff struggled with English.
Well it was always a bit embarrassing being English abroad, especially if near a resort town hosting the all day breakfast munching lager swillers who, wouldn't make any effort with the language.
But elsewhere, even since brexit I've had nothing other than warmth, and even sympathy, as soon as it became apparent I'm not a brexiteer.
Tbh I think if you're an independent tourist off the beaten track a bit, they tend to automatically assume you're not 'one of them'.
And if you make some attempt with the language..However hopeless, that helps too.
My German farm help tells me that most of her fellow citizens regard brexit with a sort of nonplussed mystification..
But of course it's not of their day to day concern .
Plus having their own cohorts of anti EU and anti forriner sorts, and some difficult history themselves they also know how things can get out of hand / how people can be manipulated into believing untruths peddled about 'others'
