Cheer up, your vote matters to you and that's all that matters.
I console myself with the thought that, even if it makes no difference to the outcome, it cancels out yours.

My vote doesn't count for a lot either, but the difference is I don't feel sorry for myself because of it.

I'm also flattered my vote seems to mean so much to you.

Yet another who can't hack anyone with a different opinion.

What is it with lefties that makes them so small minded?

Alternative government...

Perhaps it's time to accept that politicians don't achieve anything while in power so we could get rid of the whole Parliament gravy train.

In its place we already have a fully functional Civil Service who do the work of Government on our behalf.

So what we could vote on are the appointments of the senior civil service posts on fixed term contracts without secured tenure- we could call them Ministers of State forming the Cabinet, with sub-cabinets formed by local authority heads who are also non-political. If any of them do a bad job their contracts are not renewed and we vote for a replacement.

In addition we can elect a First Minister [of State], which is a presidential role to represent Government internationally- briefed and instructed by the department ministers. There are no Political Parties and no whips to manipulate....

Fantastic idea. What would we call all of these elected civil servants?............ Politicians, perhaps?

Something nasty in the woodshed
Read it now, some still think leaving was the way to go but not got the deal they expected.

But you all know this anyway.
They got the deal everyone who voted remain told them they were going to get - y'know, 'Project Fear'.

I can't have a lot of sympathy for a so-called businessman who couldn't be arsed to do any research about the possible consequences to his livelihood of leaving, and instead chose to take the word of a bunch of proven liars, cheats and grifters, and their Big Red Bullsh!t Bus.

I can only imagine, if you think that Politics is absent in the Civil Service (or NHS) you have not worked in either organisation. ;)
I appreciate that people have political ambitions and that Party Politics is the problem- hence there would be no Party Political Representation- everyone would be apolitical in office and everyone would be employed not elected.

[Edit: you are right- never worked in either but Mrs A_T has worked as a scientist in the NH all her life... Party Politics was jumped on except at Trust Board level where they had to fight for every scrap of funding...]

a) I didn't mention Party, I simply said "Politics", it might start with no "Parties", but, I am sure the movers and. shakers would soon form some "alliances".

b) In you original "idea", you said "vote" and "elect"? Our existing politicians are "employees", ie, they are paid a salary, and, every GE, they run the risk of being voted out, so, what is the difference?

It's a 'work-in-progress'!

You didn't mention Party.... I did. Party politics is the division which separates people into 'us' and 'them'... happens the world over. MPs are not employees- they are a privileged class, and once elected are no longer accountable fir the term... they ate whipped into voting for policies for which there is no mandate except of their own imagination.

Polarised politicians are compromised from the outset... it's a divisive system. which is short-termism at its worst.
