Fake religious building as a tax dodge?

The contrast with the front of the house is, shall we say, surprising.

Maybe Nonconformists.

I suspect that an estate agent's lens might have distorted the dimensions of the extension.

I would guess it's roughly the same height as the ridge of the main house, even with that weird angle. It would be interesting to see the planning documents.

Correct guess.

The oddest thing is why someone would want a feature window providing a direct line of sight from several gardens and houses right into your bed. There's not even a view.

And the cost for that extension would be, based on bailing out of something of similar scale about 2 1/2 years ago because the dream wasn't worth the cost, would be about £300k or more. On that basis I suspect the properties in that area are all worth about £500k. But no matter what they have done, it's still a suburban semi detached so they are never going to recoup the investment, particularly as the result is so hideous.

St Albans has some very expensive areas.
But I agree it is probably not going to be economical to build as resale value would be limited.

Yeah you can see some recently sold prices nearby. It's competing with larger semis and smaller detached with nice gardens (rather than gardens with extensions on them). I think I was actually about £100k too low and next door would be more like £600k, in which case their £300k extension would have been far better spent on something that had already been built. That's what we did in the end (shouldn't have done either, but that's a different story).

To be fair, in the right place, and without the goldfish bowl bedroom (RJS commented on that on a Bluesky PM I sent him), the design doesn't displease me aesthetically in itself, it's just on the wrong building. It might have worked at one storey, but the two storeys make it a 'statement' which doesn't work there.

The pitch of the roof is all wrong. To my eye there's a maximum difference between adjoining roofs that you can't exceed.

It also looks like part of it fell off, which throws off all the proportions. Either that or it was the result of two competing building projects that met in the middle.

It is all kinds of wrong and the architect needs a good talking to.

Guess would be that they wanted the maximum height they could get away with, but then that needed very steep pitch to get it down to the existing roofline in time. Not sure what's going on on the LH side to make it all lopsided. Without that, they could (as Mr H implied), they could have put a nice gold cross on the apex, and called it the Church of Latter Day St Albans (plural).
