The Guardian are using it.

It does seem unlikely, but it would have had to have been edited by the photographer or agency (Richard Pelham/Getty Images), and I doubt if either would risk their reputation. I've tried to find a slo-mo video of football hitting a wall at high speed, but can't find any, which seems a bit weird.

I am wondering how you found it in the first place, given your disinterest in the game. I assume it was on one of your explorations if the dark corners of the internet, searching for "soft balls" or some such.

Perhaps I ought to do a PhD in football by feeding prompts into AI, remaining entirely uninterested (and disinterested) in football all the while. The viva might be a challenge, though if perv glasses are still legal then I could get them to feed me the answers.

Max Dowman comes off the bench to score at the ripe old age of 16 years and 73 days. Wrong thread but BT's wrath doesn't bother me and everyone is in here for some squashed ball reason:

I the slow motion video you posted the impact is low speed compared to the one hitting the player. I think the may not be out of the woods yet. Awful if that's the case.

Being hit by a Haaland bullet cannot have been fun. However, a hero to me preventing a goal and the widening gap between City and Arsenal.

I hope that professional footballers get the same strict guidelines that youth rugby players get if they've had a severe head impact. Even if they avoid immediate concussion symptoms/injuries (bleed on brain, etc.), they are given clear guidance on what they can do for at least two weeks following the impact. I suspect that had I had (and followed) the same clear guidelines following my bike tumble, I'd not have developed such debilitating post-concussion syndrome.

It's pretty strict in footery.

Good. For too long it was just "Man up, and get back out there", but thankfully the science of concussion (and history of poor care) have been recognised. As I know only too well, an initial ability to 'carry on' after a head impact doesn't tell you much about the actual damage already done, and which can be worsened by not having strict protocols for the days & weeks after an impact.
