That's almost part of a dialect. The fact it's a naval term is no more validating as the fact it's a scientific term or, worse still, Scouse.

Actually, seriously, I put some of young people's lack of fascination/appetite for the English language per se down to the way it's taught and examined: firstly SPAG tests and prescriptive grammar terminology, and then the focus on having to learn other people's interpretations of 'the classic texts to regurgitate for exams. If you wanted to create system in which to turn young people off having an insatiable appetite for the miracle of their mother tongue, which is like a verbal archaeology of our history, brains, and human communication, you couldn't do much better than what we've got.

So did I, but didn't have inspiring teachers. And by skipping Y11, I missed having to do English Lit. Always really hated being told what books to read, not least as I preferred to waste countless hours in the Bristol central music library next door.

I'm not sure that's a good thing... having to use a paper dictionary and stumbling on other words as you look for the one you want is an education in itself.
