That's almost part of a dialect. The fact it's a naval term is no more validating as the fact it's a scientific term or, worse still, Scouse.

I was lucky enough to be taught before the teaching of English became terribly prescriptive. And I had a couple of very good teachers.
I'm not sure that's a good thing... having to use a paper dictionary and stumbling on other words as you look for the one you want is an education in itself.

That's more hygienic that the Yanks, who always seem to want to go in a bath.
Works for me, but I'm in France - shortage of roughage.They even ask for coffees to go.
