''Reform UK could be forced to hand back some of the £72 million the party has received from two crypto billionaires, it has emerged.
Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne have given the party £36m each in the past 48 hours.
Party leader Nigel Farage said he was “humbled and honoured” that the pair had made the donations.
But housing secretary Angela Rayner has suggested that a new law capping donations form foreign donors at £100,000 could see Reform having to return some of the pair’s money.

The proposed reforms are based on the recommendations of a review by former civil servant Philip Rycroft.
Although Delo is understood to have returned from Hong Kong to live in the UK earlier this year, Harborne is still based in Thailand.
Rayner told BBC1’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg that the new law would be “retrospective”, meaning it would cover donations fro foreign donors dating back to March.''

Therefore she does mean not just ''retrospective'', but retroactive (like the Child Support Act 1991).

See the spelling in my previous post. I did notice, but tend not to do pedantry in social media, unless I'm feeling wicked, as I'm also a hypocritical pragmatist who 1) can usually perfectly well understand what people are trying to say, even if they make spelling or grammar mistakes 2) doesn't think that social media posts need to be held to the same high standard as other more formal media.

It should depend on numbers of people prepared to actively campaign, never on the amount of donations.

Agreed, it would just come across as them trying to stop Reform getting donations. It’s something that should have been sorted out decades ago. It’s ridiculous that an individual or business can donate such huge sums as they’ll obviously be expecting a return on their ‘investment’.

I agree with that and would add TUs to your list of huge donors.

Reform getting this money cannot be good for either of the main parties, or any other party, and while I believe it is bad for the country I cannot help but have a feeling of schadenfreude for Labour and Tory parties.

They have both shied away from legislating for caps on donations when they have had the power because it suited them, and now the biter has been bit.

I do think there’s a subtle difference with Unions in that they are effectively collecting donations from their members and passing them on. Not that I have any love for Unions from my time being a member when working in the public sector.

Clearly the Telegraph policy would be to stand on the edge of the white cliffs and use long poles to push them back in to the channel.
