On the subject of switching allegiance, I've never understood how an MP can be elected for one party and then just decide "Actually, I think I'll join this other party instead, sod the constituents that voted for me". Should that trigger a "Bye"-election?
Plus, UKIP, and by extension Farage, always used to insist that anyone defecting to them would automatically have to resign on principle and trigger a by election. Guess Reform don't hold the same principles!

Yes, that. was my guess too, and, a view I share.
This does make me think why do we actually have MPs?, why not save all of those salaries, expenses etc, just have the election based on cardboard cut outs. Plus of course, ban the unelected "advisors".

I think the Tories AND Labour are going through an existential crisis. Both are in extinction territory now and even if Labour get rid of Starmer (or more likely he quits before next Summer) the next leader will have to contend with the absolutely dire state of the public finances. It's costing the government more to borrow money now than after the disastrous Truss/Kwartang budget and the threat of a Sterling crisis and an IMF bailout look very real, despite what some lower mid wits might believe. In the meantime we might as well crack open the popcorn and enjoy all the fireworks when Peter Mandelson seeks his revenge and starts leaking all the stuff to the press that he's been keeping quiet about up to now.

I agree. Comes from a lack of effective opposition. Large majorities are more difficult to control than slim ones.

Dunno. There's talk of a plan for Andy Burnham to resign and stand for election in a safe seat so he can throw his hat in the ring. Trouble is there's no such thing as a safe seat these days and he might not win. Frankly I don't really care who leads the party. There's a fundamental realignment going on in politics because voters are fed up of being lied to by useless, hypocritical politicians who can't even deliver the most basic of services but can still feather their own nests and live high on the hog at our expense. I'm still of the opinion that some sort of financial crisis will take hold and force Labour to go to the country before the next election, be it because the bond markets stop lending and they can't finance daily spending or there's a run on the pound and Sterling collapses. That might not happen of course but that just leaves them limping towards the next election with nothing to show for their 5 years in office but the highest taxes and the worst public services in peacetime. I mean it's just possible that a new leader can turn it all around but only in the same way that it's possible that Jeremy Clarkson could become leader of the Green Party.
