Everyone knows that you are supposed to have a full portion of chips on the side, half and half is for visiting continental lightweights.

This reminds me of a senior figure in AUK, no longer with us. We had a meeting in Edinburgh, organised by a Scottish member. He'd gone to some trouble over the food, and noticed that Bernie wasn't eating.
"Would you like some lasagne, Bernard?"
"Er, no thanks."
"A piece of quiche then?"
"Er, no thanks. I don't like to experiment wi' me food."
