Looking at the videos from the Southend incident, it seems to be only young males with tracksuits around their ankles. I seriously doubt there was any sort of political agenda. To me it looks like football violence but without the football. i.e. different groups from slightly different areas, having beef with each other for no sensible reason. But the knife/machete wielding is extremely worrying. I know there has been rivalry in the past between various football fans, mods and rockers, etc, but to see the size of the blades and so many people with them is I think another level up

The EDL grew from a coalition of various football hooligan firms. It gave them an outlet for violence and hatred when they found themselves increasingly prevented by banning orders from attending games.

You see you don't need the EDL, to be able to act and operate like the EDL....

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said he has “no doubt” Glasgow will reject the far-right ahead of a planned protest, reports the PA news agency.
A “pro-UK rally” has been planned for the city’s George Square on 7 September, with English Defence League (EDL) founder Tommy Robinson – whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – promoting the event on social media.
Plans for the rally come after violence in Southport, Merseyside, this week after the killings of three young girls in a knife attack.
Police say the scenes were sparked by supporters of the far-right, claiming those present backed the EDL.

Sarwar was joined by Glasgow city council leader Susan Aitken, who wrote on social media:

Glasgow (and Scotland) will solidly reject these twats. Overall, we are a much more open and welcoming country and have no time for racists or bullies. Look at the community response in Kenmure Street a couple of years ago for a flavour of how we look after our neighbours.

There are some locals who’ll turn up but I’m confident they’ll be drowned out by the good people of the city.

FFS, when is the political class in this country going to start taking the fascist threat seriously

Farage is very clever with exactly what he says, which at first seems innocuous, but contains heavily loaded messages for his supporters....
On the one hand pretending that he condemns the riots but suggest that Police need to be very careful/prepared as riots could escalate at the weekend *wink-wink*
T0553R....

The more reason to put pressure on Farage and not be evasive.

Is it all the fault of social media?

It’s certainly a major driver in this sort of thing.

The woman who first spouted the lies on Twitter with the (false) Arabic name of the Southport suspect, his (false) arrival by boat last year and his (false) presence on an MI6 watchlist has been identified as Bernie Spoffit, a right-wing, conspiracy theory megaphone (we’re talking chemtrails, coronavirus misinfo, climate change denial etc..) with over 44,000 followers. Her tweet was picked up and amplified by others of her ilk and gave us the recent riots, starting with Southport.

It’s the fault of this type of person who maliciously put the focus on a chosen target (muslims, immigrants, asylum seekers etc) and of those who blindly accept this type of material and repost it on other social media, such as cycling forums.

She’s now locked her Twitter account and given different accounts of how she came by the ‘information’ she broadcast.

She’s issued a feeble non-apology and has the gall to warn others about spreading information about her.

It’s alway one rule for them, isn’t it?

And in all of this, where's the government? Aren't the PM or the home secretary not going to say anything?

Just a thought, if the innocent person she named actually exists, could they mount a civil case (defamation?), possibly crowdfunded, if a compliant legal team were not available? A nice hefty damages award may make other morons think twice

I’ll tell you what is good to see: the large numbers of local people who turn out to clean up and repair their community after the racist thugs have gone back to where they came from.

These are the real everday folk, workers and tax payers, who are happy to coexist with others and take pride in their town. The thugs will never defeat that, no matter how far they roam to cause damage.
