Presumably you find this hateful in much the same way as orchestral versions of pop songs make me cringe?

Yup. Horses for courses. Equally I hate the Stan Kenton album of Wagner arranged for big band. I wouldn't mind if was a joke, but he wanted it to be taken seriously.

Actually, it's so bad, it's *almost* funny.

On a similar subject I would recommend looking up Purcell’s ‘Dido’s Lament’ sung by Jeff Buckley, it is on YT. It is such an astonishingly honest performance that having heard it I find the usual mezzo soprano renditions disappointing.

Just off to listen to the JB version. In a similar vein, worth listening to Sting doing Dowland lute songs. He's a remarkable musician.
