Whilst I don't use Social media (beyond a couple of special interest traditional forums like this one), I still take a fair few steps to protect my personal information as it's not only "Social Media" trying to harvest your information.I have no intention of providing and personal data without knowing how it is to be used and stored/ processed.
Basic GDPR information is the least I would expect
However if others are happy to provide personal data without knowing how it will be used or stored, the go ahead
And beyond blocks, etc. to protect my details I recognise I wont be 100% secure so I use a number of fake IDs (with matching or hidden e-mails where necessary) so any info they do manage to harvest will be pretty useless.
Seems to work eg I don't like that political parties in UK get the right to the entire un-redacted electoral register for the entire country plus the record of which elections you voted in and which you didn't. So earlier this year I put "Subject Access Requests" in to all the UK Political Parties who had requested the register for my constituency. Conservative Party sent me 13 pages of info "about me" they had purchased from info brokers and amalgamated with other sources and it was a complete load of drivel, pretty well everything wrong (they hadn't been able to get credit score or financial info).
