I think he thought that dull and competent would be enough.
And Polanski is about as populist as Corbyn was. And Corbyn was a populiast. Just not brazenly in it for the wrong reasons, like Farage.
Trouble was that competence while chasing polling numbers from day one rather than principled policies when he had a massive majority, wasn't competent government. He was just reacting to events, and did it poorly.
And yes, Polanski's populism isn't malign, just often misguided/misjudged.
