I think he thought that dull and competent would be enough.

And Polanski is about as populist as Corbyn was. And Corbyn was a populiast. Just not brazenly in it for the wrong reasons, like Farage.

Trouble was that competence while chasing polling numbers from day one rather than principled policies when he had a massive majority, wasn't competent government. He was just reacting to events, and did it poorly.

And yes, Polanski's populism isn't malign, just often misguided/misjudged.

It strikes me that someone who speaks in cliches is tied to the past. That's where those cliches, and the thoughts behind them originated.

That makes it almost impossible to generate any genuine energy or enthusiasm.

Listening to Burnham's speech I was struck by the number of cliches he used

Perhaps he is relying on the current younger generation not being around in the 1970s/1980s, thus not remembering how crap they were?

power cuts
awful housing conditions
regular strikes - often wildcat ones
industrial decline
factories closing
having to borrow money from the IMF

not quite the halcyon times Burnham would have us believe.
Mind you, Burnham was only 9 years old when Margaret Thatcher came to power, so he probably has little real recollection of the 1970s.
Its a fact that all but one of the episodes of the boys from the Blackstuff was written before Thatcher came to power, so its actually a reflection of what things were like in the era Burnham wants to return us to, if he is quoted correctly
