Seems the house is overvalued- gives Rayner a larger payout for her deposit on the Hove flat

The conveyancing firm never gave tax advice to Rayner- she provided the figures and information to be submitted to HMRC- she's potentially defrauded the revenue.

Her sons trust might be worth far less because she sold and overvalued portion of the house.

She lied about the advice, the valuation, submitted erroneous figures to HMRC. Tried to blame the conveyancing firm, cried on breakfast TV

There are many videos, with her and starmer being sanctimonious over tax, and wrongdoing in politics

Now we await the ethics report - how can they spin this?

Starmer has gone from no comment about Rayners future to he will sack her if she broke ministerial code of ethics.

She is now another huge anchor around starmers neck.

Every week there is a new scandal for labour.

Turns out Brian is a closet labour fan- the shame

I've no idea if it was deliberate or advertent. Do you? Even HMRC make mistakes over tax, as you will be aware of, not least as you got a seven-figure judgement against them.

FWIW, in France there is a constitutional right to correct honest tax mistakes without penalty.

Bottom line is, as I say, if she's broken the law, she should go. If she hasn't, I'd expect her to fight her corner, in the same way Jeremy Hunt did over his property portfolio, which wasn't illegal either, IIRC.

The fact that she removed her name from the deeds of another of her properties (the Northern one) a few weeks before the Hove flat purchase strongly suggests that this was deliberate.

Legality aside, this is someone who has preached about the evils of not paying your taxes in full; gone after Tories accused of tax avoidance like a Rottweiler after a postie; and more recently has been proposing tax rises that even Reeves pushed back on. Someone in her position needs to set an example, not be a stinking hypocrite in the usual leftie politician mould of 'Do as I say, don't do as I do'.

Although she has now topped it all by lying about the 'tax advice' that she claimed to have received - see my post above. I have no reason to think that her lawyers are lying, do you?

I'm just trying to get the hang of this whataboutery business on NCAAP. Does the rule only apply if the person making the argument is someone you disagree with but it's ok if it's you or somebody who you side with who's doing it? In any case, the legalities of it make no odds to me. If you've spent your long years in opposition loudly attacking the Toreh Scum for avoiding tax then you're hoist by your own pertard if you're found to be at it yourself and you should walk.

Come on SF, you must remember the 'Free Leftie Pass' from Cake Stop days. Saint Ange is a leftie hero who can do no wrong.

Although Starmer is desperately trying to hang onto her as he needs her a buffer between him and the unions. A bit like 'Two Jags' Prescott was for Tony Blair, 'Three Houses' Rayner is for Starmer Chameleon.

Nor is the stamp duty position that complex - you can go on the HMRC website and see the rules. It is clear you should pay the extra stamp duty if your children own a property through a trust and you then buy a second property.

An interesting aside is that the Guardian and the BBC are reporting that for her purchase of a property in Hove, Sussex, Rayner used not a solicitors firm, but a firm of licenced conveyancers based in Herne Bay, Kent.

1. It is unlikely that this firm could give her "expert" tax advice on her situation. If she is relying on advice from them, she has I think shot herself in the foot - however, we do not know if she had tax advice from this firm of licenced conveyancers
2. I'm curious why someone from Manchester area, living also in Central London would use a conveyancing firm based in Kent for a purchase in Sussex. - not that there is on the face of it anything at all wrong with this, but it does raise questions of why she used that firm
Yes, you use a Legal 500 international firm for the trust, then go to north Kent for your 3/4 million conveyance ?

They said that they were not an inexperienced firm, and were sensible enough to have multiple caveats in their bumph stating that they cannot give legal, tax or financial advice, they only do the conveyancing.

They basically enter the client's information onto the HMRC website, and the number generated is what is due. They should have a copy of the information provided, and I would hope that Sir Laurie Magnus now has a copy of those sheets of paper.

It seems odd that Angela Rayner’s family home was valued at almost twice the amount of other recently sold properties on her street, when she sold a stake to her disabled son’s trust so she could buy a holiday home. If this house has been significantly overvalued when she sold her share to her son's trust, is that not tantamount to fraud ? As a trustee, defrauding a trust is a very serious offence.

It would definitely be a breach of her legal obligations as a trustee to act in the best interests of the beneficiaries.

And another issue raised by the Telegraph for Rayner to deal with

Not really
My house is twice the value of recently sold properties in my street. Mostly because it's one of two 5 bed houses (in estate agent speak - id define it as 4 bed with 3 reception rooms) on the street and the majority are two or three bed, plus I have an extension and double the amount of garden.

Not all houses on the same street are the same value.

IF (and its a big IF) Rayner is sacked / resigns from her position in Cabinet over this story, where does that leave her as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Starmer appointed her as Housing Minister, so he can remove her from that role, but the Labour Party members voted her as Deputy Leader.
Could we potentially ( theoretically?) have a situation where Starmer sacks her as Housing Minister, and as a result falls out with her yet still has to work with her as Deputy Leader of the party and is unable to do anything about this?
