Is there any reason that you can think of why the move to much larger Unitary Councils was initiated by the previous Conservative Government? Now I'm sure that they were completely motivated by cost saving and efficiency and not at all to gain more control at local levels.

The guardian suggests that around 600 councillors will not contest their seats and stay in office for an extra year. 200 of those are Labour.

It's hardly a surprise that the Party that spunked money away on two general elections and a referendum in the space of two years due to internal politics would want to go ahead with the elections. You've then got purdah before each of the two elections where Councils get disrupted and decisions on things like planning can't be made. It would almost certainly be better for politically to just continue as planned.

Judging by comments upthread, then yes, but the vast majority are Labour ones.

I don't see what that has got to do with the likelihood that Labour councils are running scared of elections.

Although tbh it is arguably in Labours interest to lose, as if they think that Reform will make a big hash of it, let them get on with it now before the GE.
