I won't be holding my breath, but it's worth a try if it avoids a world recession or world war, on balance. I think the calculation will be that Trump is unlikely to physically invade Greenland imminently, so there's leeway to try non-catastrophic options first. Obviously if Trump does invade, then gloves will be off anyway, and there will be military planning going on behind the scenes to deal with that beyond the 'tripwire' already in place.

They are calculating bastards, but not insane in the same way as Trump is. Trump doesn't care what happens to the US, whereas they do. And if they see that he's throwing that all away, they won't spare him. Up till now, his madness has served their purpose.
