I watched some of the debate in the HoC this afternoon, and that seemed to reflect the mood.

Both glee but also giving Ms Badenoch a very easy target she just can't miss so she's looking more capable (to Conservatives).

It would be more than just a silver lining, if it meant Starmer didn't keep on having to appease the racists with anti-immigrant stuff, and could also ditch his EU 'red lines'. I get the impression that McS has insulated/isolated him from his backbench MPs, but also totally controlled what he is allowed to think and say.

When you consider the McSweeney/Mandleson alliance and propensity for dirty tricks it may be worth reconsidering everything you read about Corbyn while the two plotted to excise him from the Labour Party

I thought of this when I heard Corbyn’s speech earlier in the HoC. Certainly had the measure of Mandelson.

It's a bit of a balancing act. If you are dealing with a corrupt regime where sweeteners are expected, then to stick to your guns and say "no bribes" isn't going to get you a good deal. Instead, you offer the sweetener but also a bit of push back "we can't keep doing this old chap - not the done thing you see. "

Friend of mine worked for a company that had been giving out sweeteners to accommodate its business in Nigeria for years. Then there was a military coup, supposedly based largely on eradicating corruption. Problem was, they were at a loss to know whether the new guys really meant it. Should they grease the new palms or shouldn't they? It was a real poser.

I appreciate that the tories are enjoying a moment of glee today, bless them. But some very angry Labour backbenches are calling the shots. Today has shown that Rayner is not afraid to wield her influence.

So are many in the UK. It's all going a bit pear shaped for Starmer isn't it?

I think you may be confusing Keir Starmer with the Labour Government.

Err, the PM IS to all intents and purposes the Labour Government.
He is ultimately responsible for everything they do. It is the PMs agenda, his decision who he appoints, who he sacks, etc

For someone who claims not to support Labour, you seem to wholeheartedly leap to hteir defence every time there is any criticism of them.

So in that case he's responsible for a current 82% success rate on the manifesto and also appointing an appropriate sleezebag to swim with sleezebags. Unfortunately the sleezebag in question had a bit more sleeze in his bag than was expected.

The furore instigated by the likes of the Mail is disingenuous at best. You would think that the only suitable ambassador would be the purest of virgins untainted by humanity. That's not how diplomacy works.
