Can you make a mistake acting on the facts known at the time when the bad stuff comes out afterwards.

Asking for a friend.

A mistake is a mistake

I don't think he'd have rebutted Ratcliffe's nonsense yesterday so quickly or unequivocally had McSweeney been in the picture, "cos we can't call out racist Reform voters".
On this aspect I do find Ratcliffe's comments quite objectionable (and quite in character) but then was what he said just in-line with the "Island of Strangers" attitude? Just look at Mahmood's attitude to refugees seeking asylum.

Indeed so. 🥿🥿(Sorry, no pipe emoji @First Aspect )

I find Mahmood as objectionable as Braverman and Patel, and am keeping fingers crossed that the defenestration of McSweeney leads to a change in both the messaging and personnel at the Home Office.

As said previously, I've been frustrated that Labour didn't take advantage of their huuuuge majority from the start to 'change the narrative' on immigrants, rather than just kowtow to the xenophobia of Reform and thereby validate it. The effect of Blue Labour has been toxic on both the Labour Party and on the UK in trying to find pragmatic solutions to a population that will increasingly rely on immigration to sustain the UK.

It isn't, but appointing him was. And not just in hindsight. More in the sense of "I put £50 on Galloping Gertie in the 2:30 at Chepstow at 150:1 and in hindsight I should not have."

That's the thing with gambling. You only complain with the benefit of hindsight when you lose. You'd be quite happy with £7500 in your pocket.
I think most people knew at the time that it was a gamble, but one worth taking. Hindsight is wonderful, especially if you can re-write it.

In my farming days, when I was wondering if a different outcome might have occurred had I done something different, the vet said simply "Hindsight is a bugger."

Labour MP Emma Lewell quoted in The Times as allegedly telling Starmer

'I can't even begin to explain how much it hurts when people are screaming at me in the street that I am a member of the 'paedo protectors party'.'

Ms Lewell added: 'You have said so many times now things will be different, each time it isn't.'

Quite damming whichever way you read it

Michael Gove was literally on the TV at the weekend saying that at the time of appointment Mandelson was a reasonable choice.

Farage, not being an honourable politician, now denies he said it was OK.

Whether better use of 'due diligence' and/or DV, or a different and better checking system, would have outed Mandy's connections I suspect is still not fully explored.

Have I missed something?, when did Gove become an authority on anything, wasn't he part of the previous rubbish Government?

How long before "Sir" Jim is announced as a Reform member/future parliamentary candidate?*

*Only half said in jest!

The point being made is that a lot of the rw commentards that are frothing about what a bad idea it was to appoint Mandelson, are on record as having endorsed the appointment quite enthusiastically at the time. No one is saying that these people are worth listening to.
