Government exceeded its powers and lost when challenged.

Like pretty much all these cases it was, or should have been, obvious that the action was unlawful but they blundered on anyway.

Like Palestine Action? Funny how that freedom of speech infringement doesn't bother the usual suspects.

It was a complete mess of a scheme anyway. eg Norfolk didn't actually ask for the elections to be "postponed" yet had been told by Government it would be "postponing" their elections.

It always seemed a scheme that had potential to bite them on the backside

There was no way to make it look acceptable to cancel elections

Apparently so. Even more embarrassing is that the Senior Barrister leading the country didn't seem able to spot that there were any legal issues with postponing the elections.

As well as any legal issues, the political optics as @Bromptonaut mentioned were awful.
I despair of politicians ( of all persuasions) at times who can't seem to understand how bad their decisions will make them look on some issues
