If you Bluesky, this is a delightful dump on a Times columnist who thinks that immigration policy should be based on how people feel rather than actual data.

If you are going to take on Portes in an area of his expertise you really should understand the consequence of your arguments as he will, and is going to make you look pretty silly whilst he points it out. Glancy does not seem to get this.

The "early campaigning" for the coming Council elections is "interesting".

I received a personally addressed letter ie my full name and address on the envelope and Dear <christian name> at the start of the letter from "our Nigel". Not a flyer pushed through all letterboxes near enough the street. Must have cost them a bit but then realised ... (my understanding) is the election spending window for the Council elections doesn't start until 30 MArch so they are getting in more expensive campaigning whilst amounts spent are not limited or monitored.

Yes we had similar, which I mentioned a few days ago. My concern was, where did they get my (and my wife’s) personal details, we are NOT Reform supporters.

Haven't we already had this discussion?

Yes, when I mentioned I had been sent personally addressed mail by Reform, some days or even a week ago.

Actually, notice that Labour (locally) are also leafleting early than usual, and, with more coverage.

They get copies of the full electoral register as well as the marked register. I've "kicked-up" about this with my council putting in Subject Access Requests on all parties that took it.

One aspect I find very wrong is that it's made available and taken by parties who have never and have no intention of putting candidates forward in your constituency eg my registers from Norfolk were passed to "The Common People" Party who have only ever put forward one candidate and in a Cornish constituency - what business do they have being given ny personal details!

In fact coming elections soon be time for another set of Subject Access Requests on specific parties (they don't get extended time to respond just because they are busy doing other stuff).

I have no knowledge of this, but can't anyone obtain a copy of the electoral roll?

There's a redacted electoral roll and a full one. You can asked to be removed from the full one but certain groups can have access to the full, unredacted roll. It's groups like the police but it also includes electioneering parties. It does seem wrong that it's available to political parties. There's often good reasons why people don't want their address in the public domain and once it's released to a political parties it's easy to see how that info might end up in other hands.

Anyone can buy the open register for an area - usually for an admin fee of around £10. The full register is available to Registered political parties, candidates and campaigner. They are also entitled to access the “marked register”, which enables identification of individuals who have voted in previous elections and referendums, but not how they have voted.

https://ico.org.uk/for-organisation...-campaigning-1/use-of-the-electoral-register/

  • The full register contains the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote. Use of the full register is restricted.
  • The open or edited register contains the names and addresses of everyone who has registered to vote but who has not opted out of the open register. It is available for sale for any reason. About 60% of registered electors are opted out of the open register. The Electoral Commission has called for the open register to be abolished.

Access to the full register

There are strict rules on who has access to the full register and on what use can be made of the data. Breaches of the rules are a criminal offence.

  • Public inspection: anyone can inspect the full register under supervision. They may make handwritten notes but cannot make any copies or use the information for marketing.
  • Some organisations are entitled to a free copy of the full register on publication. These include:
    • the Office of National Statistics and National Records of Scotland
    • the British Library and national libraries in Scotland and Wales
    • the Electoral Commission and boundary commissions
    • Returning Officers running an election
  • Those entitled to a free copy on request include elected representatives, political parties and candidates standing for election. This is so they can campaign and engage with voters. It also allows them to check donations are from registered voters. Donations over £500 are not permitted unless the individual is registered to vote.
The full register is also used for summoning juries

Credit reference agencies are entitled to buy copies of the full register. This allows businesses to carry out credit checks for people applying for credit and identity checks to help stop money laundering.

Full registers available for inspection or for supply will not include anonymous registration entries. The data of those under 16 who have registered in advance of reaching voting age (where the voting age is 16), is also protected and is only disclosed in very limited circumstances.
