It wouldn't take much to imagine the US being joined by Canada, Greenland, Mexico and S America at least as far as the Panama Canal. It would end all the worries about illegal immigrants. Interesting that Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America not Gulf of US

I'm assuming his interest comes from mishearing it. After all, he's a big fan of gulf courses...

This is an interesting read about the man who would be king (it's a free read):-

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/...unlocked_article_code=1.uE4.7gY8.hucw94ggYrCh

That is a more detailed version of what I was thinking

The Tories have done similar things just less dramatically

Lots of "Oh look - DEAD CAT!!!!!"
and the media are all over the terrible circumstances of the Dead Cat and interviewing cat charities and at owners
and in the meantime 100 dogs are killed and the sounds are drowned out by the current fuss over a dead cat

Trump just does it with far bigger stuff

Trump has scored a spectacular long-term own goal with the freezing of foreign aid.

Foreign aid is as much about keeping enemy states out and limiting their influence as it is about anything else.

What a stupid thing to do when he is launching a trade war against China

This Trump presidency is set to be as much, if not more, of a disaster as the last one.

And most of that money will stay in the States.
Additionally that it's such a small %age of US Gov. expenditure. And the examples of waste White House Press Secretary is giving out are trivial (as well as being of questionable accuracy and with no evidence).

And when US wants minerals of military bases or something from other countries the world will remember the US as an unreliable partner who only understands self-interest so everyone will be less inclined to trade/help/cooperate/etc.

And China will be there to remind them with a cheque book in their hand

The Chinese leadership must be sitting there thinking that he couldn't be doing better for them if they had paid him

He's not quite worked out whether he wants to go for regressive isolationism or Billy Big Balls swaying his scrotum around globally.

But the two are not mutually compatible. Soft power is about, ultimately, markets. For somebody so keen to impose tarrifs on foreign products in order to favour US products he seems to be neglecting the foreign markets that made the US rich.

How long has it been? 3, 4 weeks? He's managed to scare some people but it looks like we are just heading for the same incoherent chaos we had during his first term.

Hope the Dems manage to regroup. They may well have won had it not been for Biden's disastrous run at a second term.
