While I have come to expect nothing better from Trump, the saddest thing about this sort of statement is that it is apparently just being accepted by the people of the US as fact. Not just by the people but by those politicians in fear of him in the Republican party and those in the Democrat party who just don't seem to have a combined voice of opposition. The checks and balances in the US constitution are just being ignored.

Perhaps there is a lot of distaste in the US population over his words and actions but, if there is, it doesn't seem to make any headlines or limit his excesses.

I think the ghettoisation of news in the US is even worse than here, so people only listen to what they want to hear. And none of the Trumpian media what to let on, both because their income streams rely on viewing figures, but because Trump will actively target any large organisations that step out of line, either with legal threats, or threatening to withdraw licences, or simply excluding them from briefings, at the most basic level.

Some time ago when Trump first tried to get his hands on Ukraine's critical minerals around the time of the White House "isn't even wearing a suit" bust-up, a Ukrainian MP was interviewed on TV and she was saying that Zelenskyy can't "give away the resources", only make outline agreements and that any deal would be subject to ratification in Parliament.

A few days ago when Trump was claiming a deal signing will be "next week" Trump was talking about a "Deal" where Ukraine official statements were talking about a "Heads of Agreement".

I wonder if Trump hasn't been paying any attention to details, thinks he's got his "deal" and has moved too early to pull out of helping Ukraine and declaring support for Russia. I suspect Trump is pulling out of supporting Ukraine either with or without any ceasefire/peace deal so Ukraine is losing US support and Ukraine will be aware of that. Are Ukraine really going to progress any minerals deal beneficial to Trump when Trump has forced their surrender, refused then further aid and sided with the invader of their country? I suspect they are not stupid.

In terms of cards, minerals is what Ukraine has that Trump doesn’t. Really it is the only card they have at the moment so they will play it carefully.
Trump weirdly believes that he can make things so, by believing it, almost as if he has been brought up on an unhealthy diet of The American Dream.

Trump is assuming others can ignore laws and Constitutions in the same way he is

eg Ukraine legally cannot recognise Crimea as Russian without a referendum and no referendum can legally be held whilst they are at war (as they'd need to include regions occupied by Russia). It's their Constitution.

eg US cannot legally recognise Crimea as Russian as they've used Russia's illegal invasion of Crimea as the justification for sanctions (they'd need a passed by Congress)

eg International Law means that Crimea cannot be recognised as Russian

So Trump is not getting his "deal" whatever.

Probably in the minds of Trump and his acolytes, if they can't get the minerals from Ukraine's government, they can let Russia invade Ukraine and then do a deal for the minerals with Russia. I imagine that Putin and Xi have other ideas of how things will work if Ukraine were to fall in Russian hands.

Trump has the “I want that one“ attitude, and mentality.

He has all the traits of a ……….er……….toddler really.
Fibs, denies fault, blames everyone else, short attention span, lives in the moment, no planning, no consequences.

Ok a bit unfair to toddlers, they can be cute sometimes.

"Writing on his Truth Social account at just before 08:30 local time in Washington DC, Trump said the deadly strikes on Kyiv were "not necessary, and very bad timing".
"Vladimir, STOP!" he concluded. "5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let's get the Peace Deal DONE.""

Putin says "meh".

If Trump were genuinely concerned about people dying he wouldn't be providing Israel with all those bombs and supporting their use on innocent civilians.

He seems under the impression that if he can force through a ceasefire (even on terms all but guaranteeing hostilities will resume once Russia has rearmed) then he'll get the Nobel Peace Price which is his dream as Obama got one.

Nobody will tell him that ceasefire ≠ peace.

As posted by Zelensky this morning:

A 2018 Crimea Declaration from Mike Pompeo, secretary of state during Donald Trump’s first term said: “The United States rejects Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea and pledges to maintain this policy until Ukraine’s territorial integrity is restored.”

Not that it'll make much difference.
