I assume he’s back to being a misunderstood good guy in Trump’s addled brain this week.

Well I guess we know what the Putin call was about the other night. Putin gave him some ‘handy hints’ on how to stop war number ‘9‘ and win the peace prize.

• draw the lines as they are and go home
• don’t send Tomahawks as you need them yourself
• Tomahawks will only make matters worse

Like most, I do find it amazing how easy it seems for Putin to manipulate Trump, same reasons used again and again eg "We'll escalate". It does make one wonder why Trump feels to weak he can't stand-up to these "threats". And whilst I hate conspiracy theories, does make one question what Putin might have on Trump as even with all Trump's failings, he can't be that weak. Putin is continually threatening "escalation" to everything and for the US to keep "oh in that case we'll ... do nothing" just seems unbelievable.

If Trump simply doesn't see what Putin has done/is doing (Trump is a wannabe dictator himself), Zelensky is just a big bill (Trump is all about transactions) and Trump is wholly lacking in empathy, then perhaps the reasons are more simplistic than we think.

The meeting in Budapest adds another dimension, and shows how well Putin is playing Trump. Putin will need to fly through EU airspace. If the flight is allowed the EU is shown as weak, if it is not allowed the EU can be accused of sabotaging the process. Either way, Putin wins.
