Is it nice there, in your own head?

Here's a list. Let us know which ones should give themselves back to Russia, based on fully 69 years of historical precedent.

The 15 Former Soviet Republics (Countries)

• Russia (Russian SFSR) — The largest republic and continuator state to the USSR
• Ukraine (Ukrainian SSR) — Located in Eastern Europe
• Belarus (Byelorussian SSR) — Located in Eastern Europe
• Estonia (Estonian SSR) — One of the Baltic states
• Latvia (Latvian SSR) — One of the Baltic states
• Lithuania (Lithuanian SSR) — One of the Baltic states
• Moldova (Moldavian SSR) — Located between Romania and Ukraine
• Georgia (Georgian SSR) — Located in the Caucasus region
• Armenia (Armenian SSR) — Located in the Caucasus region
• Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan SSR) — Located in the Caucasus region
• Kazakhstan (Kazakh SSR) — Located in Central Asia
• Uzbekistan (Uzbek SSR) — Located in Central Asia
• Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz SSR) — Located in Central Asia
• Tajikistan (Tajik SSR) — Located in Central Asia
• Turkmenistan (Turkmen SSR) — Located in Central Asia

And?

Many if not most of those are Russian sphere of influence, but Ukraine is of great strategic and economic value.

So exactly the same reasoning as NATO.

Indeed. But Russia claims historical rights. Also I think Putin assumed that Ukraine would fall easily because of its unstable government and endemic corruption. Instead he seems to have cured the instability, if not the corruption. I don't see the conflict being resolved any time soon.

I guess the people of Ukraine have no say in this matter?
Sounds like you are aligned with Putin and Donnie.

Three are now in the EU. Then there's Ukraine.

It's about as valid an argument as Germany's historical rights over Austria and Poland.

But are you aligned with or against Zelensky/Ukraine.

Ukraine has not been perfect in the way it has been run pre the Russian invasion, but in this case there is a clear aggressor imo.

Ukraine was a basket-case in terms of corruption and revolution (in which Russia had a hand). Putin has lashed himself to the mast - he has no option but to continue, otherwise he risks losing prestige and thence, probably, power. I doubt many would mourn him.
