Again, I'm no expert on US legislatures but if the Midterms go the way commentators suggest, Trûmp would no longer be seen as an electoral asset which would weaken his hold over Republicans. Then maybe they can pass constraining legislation and have adequate support to mean Trúmp cannot veto it (⅔ vote).

We hope the Dems win big so there's no room for disputing fine margins.

I think this is about optics. Republicans have pushed back against Trump's rhetoric against Zelensky and in favour of Putin. Also, I don't think he expected this reaction. I think he expected his MAGA base to go all yeehaw but the reality is that the diesel deal is a dop in the ocean of US consumption and will have no effect on fuel prices.
Europe have just announced plans for satellite communications procurement and Musk was banned from tendering contracts.
Musk I presume, was equally naive, thinking that his monopoly was safe. Globally, (India being significant), Musk has badly damaged his brand and so this may be back pedalling quick to salvage his reputation and international markets.

Not for the first time.
Not that he learned anything from the first time. Ego trumps brain.

My understanding is that support for Ukraine is fairly strong even from Republicans so I hope they'd pass a new bill without the Presidential get out clauses with more than ⅔ majority so Trûmp can't veto his loss of power to help Putin.

If Republicans no longer see Trûmp as crucial to their cause then they might be more ready to block him out.

Given his record-low popularity (or rather, record high unpopularity - nearing -40%), they might be pleased to see him run away and hide for the next couple of weeks. The perfect storm of all the things he said he'd do turning to shit (diesel prices, inflation, Iran War, cosying up to Putin) with no chance of turning any of them around are probably why he's getting more and more desperate.

The bit of the equation I don't really get are Trump's 'base', and it's them mobilising against candidates that I think they still fear. Maybe the 'base' are so invested in Trump's madness that they'd rather be consigned to electoral oblivion than give a pass to Trump sceptics who want to get re-elected by pretending they've never supported the mad king.

American Dream innit.

About time that was now changed to the American Delusion.

Oh no, the most optimistic (biased) polls put him at best 35%.
They are even talking about Kansas turning blue and since 1932 (IIRC) it's been Republican.
He's also lost the base non college educated voters below 30yo -they've abandoned him because they are the most afflicted by Trumps (lack of) policies.

Nearing minus 40% popularity (i.e. those who view him favourably minus those who view him unfavourably) is what I was saying. It's never been matched in polling two weeks before midterms.
