That's consistent with a nominally independent Ukraine reliant on Russia for supplies. Putin would agree to that...

I wonder if a significant part of the "little progress" is that Putin is still on him maximalist agenda and only Ukraine complete capitulation would meet his criteria for stopping.

Putin has a window to get what he wants. It ends when Trump leaves office.

I wonder if the Russian economy might close that window earlier (it's beyond my personal knowledge of the economic possibilities). Whilst China is an Russia "ally" I do wonder the extent that China will prop-up a failing Russia - Russian economy is small compared to US and even Europe and China won't want to damage that trade too much.

Exactly this. Pretty sure that the phone call from Putin to Trump before the meeting was to make sure he kept to the script, dangling goodies, and possibly (if the rumours are true) reminding Trump what the KGB have on him.
