Exactly this. Pretty sure that the phone call from Putin to Trump before the meeting was to make sure he kept to the script, dangling goodies, and possibly (if the rumours are true) reminding Trump what the KGB have on him.

I remain unconvinced that the KGB have anything on him. However, Russia has a lot of money and commodities that Trump would like to get his the USA's hands on.

Trump was part of the mafioso group of mobsters and real estate speculators in NYC.
During the 90's and 00's, Trump and his cronies (Witkoff included), sold a lot of property to the Russians. He became deeply embedded with them.

You wouldn’t do that. You would surrender & ask to join the other side. Nobody wants to fight for Putin even less so than people would want to fight for Starmer.

A man of his proclivities and appetites would be a very easy target. It's not just shedloads of money he likes to get his little hands on. Nothing he's done since has lessened the appearance that he's in their pocket.

I tend to agree. If it's blackmail type stuff (eg documents, photos or videos) Trump has shown several times how good he is at "fake news", AI fabrication, etc. and he just seems able to weather it. Add that he now has every Government institution (including Supreme Court) to pronounce "fake" after some 30 second non-"investigation".

Most things Putin might have on Trump would probably not be effective so my unfounded view is it's $$$ for future.

Firstly foreign policy is largely an executive responsibility, and secondly USAnians are navel gazers and there's too much domestic crap to push back on to worry about the little people.
